Douala's rainy season: should you avoid it, and when to come
Douala is one of the wettest cities on the continent. It plans perfectly well, as long as you know what to expect.
Douala gets a great deal of rain, and the wet season runs roughly from June to October, peaking sharply in August and September. It looks daunting on paper and is far easier to live with than the numbers suggest.
Rain rarely falls all day. It arrives in short, heavy bursts, often late in the day or overnight, and life resumes behind it. The real effect on a stay is not being stuck indoors. It is that traffic becomes difficult during and just after a downpour.
So the practical consequence is logistical rather than meteorological: avoid scheduling anything important straight after an hour of forecast rain, and keep an indoor alternative for the middle of the day. A gym and covered space inside the building are worth a lot in August.
If you have the choice, December to February is the most comfortable window: less rain, drier heat, and a city that moves. March to May remains very workable. June to October simply asks for a little flexibility in the schedule.
What to bring comes down to three things: shoes that dry quickly, a light waterproof, and an acceptance that a thirty-minute delay is not a problem. The city handles the rest.
